About
Every day the site shows one pattern tied to one of Ukraine's 27 regions, with a description of its symbolism and a list of the sources we relied on.
What This Site Does
VyshyvankaDaily generates a vyshyvanka pattern every day. Each day is tied to a specific region: 24 oblasts, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Kyiv, and Sevastopol.
The pattern isn't random. Its geometry is built from real, researched motifs of the region, and its palette matches what's characteristic of that specific area.
Mission
Our mission is to tell the story of Ukrainian vyshyvanka through the lens of its regions: what symbolism lies behind each pattern, where it comes from, and how one area differs from another.
That's why, alongside the patterns, the site will feature material about Ukraine's history, traditions, and contemporary culture - vyshyvanka is the starting point here, not the boundary of the topic.
Values
- A source, not a guess. Every claim is either backed by a source or clearly marked as passed down by tradition.
- A region, not a generalization. We show the differences between oblasts instead of reducing Ukrainian vyshyvanka to a single pattern.
- Context, not just pattern. Vyshyvanka is a reason to talk about Ukraine's history and culture more broadly, not only about the design.
Who Runs the Project
VyshyvankaDaily is currently run by one person - from generating the pattern to researching sources. The project is open to partnerships and support from anyone who cares about the topic.
