Frequently Asked Questions

How the pattern of the day works, where the symbolism descriptions come from, and what the account is for.

Pattern of the Day

Each day is tied to a specific region of Ukraine through a rotation that goes through all 27 regions in turn. The motif's geometry is based on real, researched ornament from that region; it is not generated at random.
The region is calculated from the calendar date. This means every visitor sees the same region on the same day, and the pattern for any past date can be reproduced exactly as it was.
The rotation starts again from the first region.
Each day has its own generation key tied to the date. It decides which of the region's permitted motifs appears that day. The number of motifs per region varies and keeps growing, so the variety of patterns for the same region will only increase over time.
Yes, for the last 27 days, a full cycle of regions: use the Recent days strip on the home page and the previous and next buttons on a pattern page. Patterns you save to your collection stay there for good.
27 is the number of administrative units of Ukraine: 24 oblasts, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and two cities with special status, Kyiv and Sevastopol. We follow this official division rather than the list of oblasts alone.
Because they are separate administrative units, not oblasts, just like Kyiv. The Crimean Tatar ornament ornek, which represents Crimea on the site, also belongs to a distinct tradition, different from mainland Ukrainian embroidery.

Sources and Reliability

We distinguish two levels of reliability. "Documented" means there is a specific academic study, museum collection or official recognition. "Traditional" means a retelling of oral tradition without a confirmed written source. Both labels are shown directly on the region page.
Through the contact page. The most useful message says exactly what is wrong and which source to rely on. We make well-founded corrections.

Account and Collection

You don't need to register to browse: the pattern of the day, the region pages and the blog are open to everyone. An account is only needed to save your favourite patterns to your own collection.
It is the number of unique regions whose pattern you saved on the day it was published, not later. The limit is deliberate: the mechanic encourages you to come back every day.
